ImageBam & Imgbox Replacement Image Host

If you go to the ImageBam or Imgbox website, you will be greeted with a simple message that reads:

Dear User,

We’d like to inform you that we will be shutting down services on June 30th, 2017. Please download and backup your files before this date.

Sincerely,
The Team

And that’s it. Just like that, both image hosts inform you that they are permanently shutting down! If you’re like me, you have been relying on these services for uploading and sharing your photos with forums and friends.

So I began looking for a replacement and I think I’ve actually found a free image host called ImageUpper.com that’s even better. You know why?

  • Upload 50 photos in one click.
  • Simple and clean layout so it’s FAST.
  • Allows both family safe and adult photos.
  • Even with that, NO pop-up ads
  • NO annoying malware banners or redirects: What a novel idea.
  • Uploaded images that actually display: Reliability with the full size images wasn’t always ImageBam’s strong suit.
  • Unlimited storage space and bandwidth as long as your photos stay active. I.e. if you share them on a forum or on your site.
  • They’ve been around for 11 years: Call me paranoid but with all the image hosts shutting down of late, I’d rather choose one that has been around for a while.

I hope this post helps those of you who are in my situtation looking for a ImageBam or Imgbox replacement . I’m still in the middle of downloading all of my photos before their arbitrary deadline.

Need a Fido Referral Code? I’ll Send You One

FidoI made the switch to Fido last year when they had some rather tempting cell phone plans with unlimited Spotify streaming.

I left Rogers for them and I have to say I haven’t been disappointed. The cell phone service and customer support are exactly the same, since Rogers obviously owns Fido, but my cell phone bill is 30% lower. Can’t complain about that! 🙂

If any of you have been on the fence, consider that Fido also provides you a $25 credit bonus if you sign up due to word of mouth from a friend. But you need to provide a personally generated referral code while signing up.

So if you need me to send you a Fido referral code, shoot me a message with your full name (needed to create it) at and I’ll send you one!

NOTE: Fido’s “refer a friend” program was ended on July 12, 2017. Any of you that have already signed up will be credited but any new customers will not be able to receive credits upon signing up.

DreamHost Dedicated Server Review & Discount

Since I posted about reliable web hosting options, I’ve been getting requests about doing an in-depth DreamHost dedicated server review so here it is.

I think the first thing to point out would be that all of DreamHost’s dedicated servers are fully managed solutions. This means that even if you’re slightly less than tech savvy, their experts will manage and monitor the performance of your server 24/7 which could take a load off depending on how experienced you are.

This is especially good news for small businesses because it means you don’t have to have an additional person on standby to handle your server’s technical issues. So while you get the full benefit of a dedicated server that will give you all the control you desire, you won’t have to deal with the headaches that come with actually have your own box.

What does a DreamHost dedicated server come with?

To name a few: RAID Storage is included by default on all servers so you always have a backup of your data, full root and SSH shell access, 1-click installs for software like WordPress, DDoS protection, 24/7 monitoring, unlimited bandwidth and 100% network uptime guarantee.

Think about the last one for a second. If you experience even a minute of downtime, since DreamHost guarantees 100% uptime, you can ask for a refund of your monthly service fee. Now that’s something not many companies will do.

Additionally, RAID by default means that you don’t have to provision and pay for a second hard drive on your server simply to constantly backup your data or keep uploading / syncing your data to another machine weekly or even daily. That’s a big plus.

While all servers come with plenty of cores, RAM and hard drive space, if you do need to upgrade anytime, you can chat or message DreamHost support and it will be added to your server in less than 24 hours with little downtime. I recently put this to the test for the sole purposes of this DreamHost review and my hard drive upgrade, which I had been putting off, was done in 11 hours from the time of the ticket to when it was complete. All with advance notice and few minutes of downtime.

All dedicated servers also come with the easy to use custom built control panel from DreamHost. This will also save you having to shell out additional fees for a licensed control panel or having to learn a complicated setup.

How much does it cost?

For the features you get, prices start at a $149 per month for the hardware and specifications you get. DreamHost has an instant quote tool if you want to modify this based on the number of cores you need, storage, and RAM. And it’s without contract so you can test and/or cancel anytime.

Any special discounts or coupons?

Yes, since DreamHost’s dedicated servers are relatively new, they are currently offering special discounts to save you a few bucks on the server, click here to view their deals.

Reliable Web Hosting Options

With my experience in internet security and web services, I’m often asked for recommendations for reliable web hosting options.

The answer for this very much depends on the kind of website you’re running and the kind of web hosting you need.

Small website on a shared server or VPS

The number of options for shared hosting is just about endless and providers are a dime a dozen. But this is why you need to know which ones are truly reliable and trustworthy and not fly-by-night scam operations.

1. HostGator
HostGator is a terrific host I’ve used over the last many years. Their uptime is outstanding and 24/7 support is second to none. The do shared, cloud, VPS and also reseller hosting with a 99.9% uptime and 45-day money back guarantee. To make it even better, you can get an active HostGator coupon to get your entire first month for just 1 cent so you don’t have anything to lose.

2. DreamHost
I have been using DreamHost on and off for the better part of a decade. The three things I can tell you are very consistent about them is the uptime guarantee, reliability and the support. Along with a very efficient up-the-chain ticket system, there is also live chat support for quick questions or inevitable emergencies. But their best feature is their little known about refund policy that lets you use their service for 97 days and still get your full money back for any reason whatsoever.

3. Namecheap
Namecheap is the newest entrant in the field but man do they provide a great value. In fact, the their hosting starts at $10 for a full YEAR of service! That includes 20 GB of SSD disk space, unlimited bandwidth and hosting for up to 3 websites in your account. They have 100% uptime guarantee SLA with an extremely helpful staff.

4. 1&1
1&1 has been around for years and, while they’ve always been known for their fantastic support, they’ve now recently added rock-solid scalable website hosting to their catalog. Even better, they also offer a 1and1 99 cent hosting discount to get started.

You really can’t go wrong with any four of these. But what if your needs won’t fit into a shared hosting account? Let’s look at the second option.

Large website on a dedicated server

If you have a larger website that needs dedicated resources, I highly recommend a dedicated server. Actually, with the prices now, it doesn’t even have to be expensive. They’re really quite affordable now and the added benefit is that you control the entire box. You can typically find a dependable dedicated server at Dedicated CPU starting for under $50 all the way up to the high end servers. I have used them and can vouch for the uptime. I’ve now been with them for 6 months with not one instance of a network outage.

Namecheap also offers dedicated servers starting at $58.88 / month but we have a Namecheap dedicated server coupon for 25% off that will bring your cost down to a wicked $44.16 for a Xeon E3-1220 v3 with 4 Cores running at 3.1 GHz with 8 GB DDR3 RAM, 500 GB HDD and 10 TB bandwidth.

You can also see our DreamHost dedicated server review. Although, I should mention that I didn’t include it here because the price is slightly higher.

Swagbucks Sign Up Code for $5 Free

SwagbucksSwagbucks is one of those websites that doesnt just help you save money but earn points, called Swagbcks, that you can redeem towards gift cards like Amazon, Starbucks, Walmart or even PayPal cash.

How do you earn Swagbucks?

It’s actually relatively simple. You can:

  • Watch videos ranging from entertainment, comedy to recipes or music videos.
  • Answer surveys picked for your profile. This in itself can earn you a gift card or two everyday.
  • Discover offers available from Swagbucks partners like Netflix or Audible. This could be signing up for a trial or simply providing your email for a newsletter.
  • Search the web. Yes, you can make it your default search engine so you earn points for doing something you do anyway.

What can you redeem for?

My most popular gift card redemption choice is Amazon but sometimes I splurge on the Starbucks. There’s a huge variety including bookstores, cinemas, clothing stores, hardware stores, grocery stores or even PayPal which is as good as cash since you can withdraw it to your bank account.

I’m interested, can I get a sign up code?

Absolutely. When signing up, enter steve2k in the box that asks for this identifier. Or you can click through below to have this automatically pre-entered for you.

For a limited time, you get 500 Swagbucks for signing up, which means you can redeem for a $5 Amazon gift card or PayPal cash almost instantly.

SwagbucksTo make the most out of Swagbucks, you can use it to search instead of Google, have the videos playing in the background while you work, and always do the daily tasks like the Daily Poll everyday, which earns you SBs for 1 click. If you’re looking for highest SBs, then typically doing the surveys aka under ‘Answer’is the best option.

Small Changes to the Memory Benchmark

Many people used the Firefox memory benchmark from my site and filed bugs for memory leaks, GC pause times and similar. Most of them got fixed over the last few months.

I made some small changes to the script today because the main benchmark window kept references to already closed windows. Now I manually delete the references.

I also removed the recently closed 280slides.com page. If anybody sees problems with other pages, please tell me. I am happy to add new pages.

Everybody that is interested in memory behavior across browsers should check out recent measurements from PC Advisor. The results are getting better and better. Congratulations to Nick Nethercote and the memshrink team!
