How To Protect Yourself From A Phishing Attack

Phishing is an attempt to “fish” for your private information. If you’re not sure what this means, read our post on What Is A Phishing Attack?

So how do you protect yourself from a phishing attack?

Treat any e-mail message that asks for confidential or personal information with a high degree of suspicion. The safest way to transact online is not not click on links through e-mail or complete information into forms that are embedded with an email. Instead, directly type in the relevant website into your browser’s address bar.

This will take you directly to the source so you may verify whether any such alerts or messages are in your account and simultaneously allow you to act upon it in a secure environment.

Another option is to call the party or organization to verify any suspicious e-mails you have received was in fact sent by them before acting upon it.

Do not open e-mail attachments from unverified or unexpected sources, no matter how serious or urgent they appear to be. Remember, the criminals want you to act without forethought.
